Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your role as the Purchaser?
Hi there. I’m Estella - a purchaser who hit 2 years of working at STYL a few months ago. It’s a coincidence that I saw a big building named Estella when looking for the best way from my home to STYL office and was impressed by this name - this is a funny story about my English name.
About my role, my manager listed all Procurement tasks in the JD and it lasted for 2 papers (*kidding). My main responsibility is to ensure material availability for production with minimum cost and risks.
My main tasks will be working with Singapore colleagues - who have a lot of experience in a variety of fields and are always willing to share their knowledge with me. I received their support well during my working time at STYL.
Besides, being a purchaser, I have the chance to work with many kinds of suppliers - from different countries like Singapore, China, VietNam… Understanding their culture and often communicating with them are some ways that I used to keep a good relationship.
Last but not least, I’d like to introduce to you all our great system - WorkDesk. This is STYL's own system used to support whole supply chain tasks, sales, and engineering. This system offers users a friendly and simple environment and is easy to work with.
What factors influenced your decision to join STYL?
Before joining STYL, I worked at an EMS (Electronic Manufacturing Services) company and I’m very curious about companies which have their own product.
Luckily, STYL’s recruiter approached me and introduced a lot of exciting information about STYL. Projects can bring not only new technological advances but also sustainable benefits to the community. At STYL, I have the opportunity to both learn and actively engage in the entire product development process. While it can be a challenging journey, it undoubtedly promises a host of exciting discoveries.
The procurement process, from sourcing suppliers to maintaining appropriate supplier relationships, is a critical aspect of our operations. Could you please elaborate on your sense of accountability throughout this process?
Personally, I think accountability is a core of not only procurement but also for other departments. Let’s start with the 1st step - sourcing phase: accountability begins with thorough research and due diligence to identify potential suppliers. This involves verifying the supplier's reputation, assessing their capability and how they provide a green supply chain. Currently, environmental sustainability is one of our goals.
As we move on to subsequent stages, such as negotiation, ordering, and cultivating relationships, accountability becomes the way in which you engage with suppliers to ensure adherence to company policies and strategies. It is crucial to guarantee that accountability remains intact while overseeing and preserving the quality of the goods or services received.
Have you encountered a challenging situation or obstacle in your work, and how did you exhibit accountability in addressing it?
I still remember the global situation in 2021 - when we faced a lot of supply chain disruptions due to COVID-19. In that case, my team and I have to take accountability not only for customer demand but also control the cost and stock at an acceptable level.
Despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic affecting our work, we were lucky to work together with other teams to find the right solutions. With a strong sense of responsibility, I believe that everyone did a great job in fulfilling their tasks, helping us overcome the difficulties during that time. This was not just a challenge, but also a valuable learning experience in dealing with urgent issues in tough situations, and it has been a part of our growth journey. <3
How do you maintain relationships with suppliers and ensure the quality of products or materials?
There are several ways to maintain good relationships with suppliers. One of the methods that I’m applying is establishing and maintaining open and transparent lines of communication with suppliers. Regularly discuss expectations, specifications, and any changes in requirements. Effective communication helps resolve issues quickly and prevent misunderstandings.
Besides, we should provide our quality standards and compensation rules clearly when working with suppliers to avoid any unnecessary conflicts and quality issues.
We are aware of your recent business trip to Singapore in early October. Could you please tell us about your experience working in Singapore?
This is my second visit to Singapore, and I continue to be amazed by its rapid development. The purpose of my trip was to visit a factory and meet with some partners with whom I will be working in the near future. Our team had an extensive meeting with them, and I was further impressed by their positive outlook. Through detailed discussions and sharing, we gained a better understanding of the supplier's operations and work methods, and we believe that they can meet our expectations.
